Public Holiday
Main article: Public holidays in MalaysiaNew Year's Eve
A government-held New Year's Eve countdown known as Ambang Tahun Baru will be held at Merdeka Square, the field opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. The event will be broadcast live on government as well as public government state-media radio and television broadcasting stations arm Radio Televisyen Malaysia. Besides the governmental event in Merdeka Square, private organizations too hold their own New Year countdown parties at major shopping malls and landmarks, most notably the fireworks display at the Pretonas Twin Towers and Kuala Lumpur Tower things fireworks from Bukit Bintang located at Jalan Bukit Bintang.
Christmas Eve
Main article: Christianity in Malaysia#ChristmasAlthough Christmas is a public holiday in Malaysia much of the public celebration is commercial in nature and has no overt religious overtones. Occasionally, Christian activist groups do buy newspaper advertorials on Christmas or Easter but this is largely only allowed in Malaysian English newspapers and permission is not given every year. The advertorials themselves are usually indirect statements. There has been controversy over whether or not the national government has exerted pressure on Malaysian Christians not to use Christian religious symbols and hymns that specifically mention Jesus Christ.
