"Upin & Ipin" is a series of animated shorts produced by Malaysian animation house Les' Copaque, and also the titular characters of the series. "Upin & Ipin" is originally a side-product for the film "" which would also feature the fictional young twins.

As of October 2008, two seasons of "Upin & Ipin" had been aired, both during the Islamic month of Ramadan in the years 2007 and 2008, on TV9 in Malaysia and TVRI in Indonesia. The first season of "Upin & Ipin" had been picked up by Hilal TV in Turkey, dubbed in Turkish for broadcast. Overview

Upin and Ipin are five-year-old identical twin brothers live in a well-off Malay-Muslim household with their sister Ros and maternal grandmother Uda ("Opah"), albeit being orphans (in episode six, the twins, Ros and Opah were seen to visit their parents' graves), in a village known as Kampung Durian Runtuh in Malaysia.

The two seasons released thus far dealt with the young twins' ordeal with Ramadan, the most venerated lunar month in Islam in which the faithful oblige themselves to abstain from consuming any food and beverage from dawn till dusk in every day of this period. Opah is seen as the boys' main source of significant religious and traditional wisdom. Despite the hunger from fasting, Upin and Ipin still maintain their mischievous tendencies which tend to annoy Ros.

In season one, not only they were induced by their elder sister and grandmother in honouring the holy month, yet their friends, including some non-Malays, helped to keep their religious obligation in check. In season two, Upin and Ipin are already in kindergarten, having known some new friends. This time, they are more prepared and delighted to usher Ramadan.

Characters

*Upin and Ipin:The main protagonists of the series. To tell the bald twins apart, Upin, who is older than his brother by five minutes, has a strand of hair, tends to dress in yellow, and appears to act as the 'leader' among the two; while Ipin tends to dress in blue, has a penchant for fried chicken, and responds to anything he agrees by resonating "Betul, betul, betul" ("betul" is Malay for "correct.")
*Ros:Upin and Ipin's older sister, whom they call "Kak Ros." She has a reputation of being fierce but is actually a loving and gentle sister. She loves to tease her brothers when the opportunity arises.
*Uda:The maternal grandmother of Upin, Ipin and Ros, whom they call "Opah." She is kind and gentle-hearted, and tends to spoil the twins. She is a fountain of worldly and religious wisdom.
*Fizi:Fizi is Upin and Ipin's neighbour. He is a confident boy who is very spoiled by his parents. Although sometimes he may appear to be boastful, he is actually very kind and friendly.
*Ehsan:Ehsan is Fizi's Cousin. He is quiet, clumsy and style-conscious, taking care to be prim and proper. He is also a loyal friend.
*Mei Mei:One of Upin and Ipin's playmates and classmates in kindergarten, an ethnic Chinese. She often acts as the voice of reason amongst her peers.
*Rajoo: The oldest of Upin and Ipin's known friends, an ethnic Tamil Indian. He is five years older than them and thus sometimes seen as a big brother figure to the twins. From the "Geng" trailers, he is also known as an "animal whisperer" who seems to communicate well with his pet bullock, Sapi.
*Mael:Another of Upin and Ipin's classmates, introduced in season two. He also joins the twins' mischievous antics but is easily distracted and hasty. He also helps his mother sell food at the Ramadhan Bazaar. In season two, Mael could not get himself to fast during Ramadan, which led him to think of himself as unfit for Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
*Jarjit:Another classmate of Upin and Ipin, also introduced in season two. He is of the same age as the rest of his class but has a hoarse adult-like voice. He always tries to join the games that the other children play, but somehow something always happens that makes him get left out. He is a Sikh, as he wears his "patka" to cover his uncut hair.
