The game, which pitted Michigan with long-time rival Michigan State University, was held at Michigan Stadium (also known as "The Big House"), which normally hosts the Michigan football team and has an official capacity of 109,901. In a rematch of the Cold War outdoor game of 2001, the 'Big Chill' set a world hockey record with an announced attendance of 113,411, surpassing the previous hockey record of 77,803 fans from the 2010 IIHF World Championship's opening game at Veltins-Arena in Germany by over 35,000 people. Guinness World Records, counting tickets scanned rather than sold, announced the official attendance as 104,173.
With over 100,000 tickets sold when Michigan stopped sales to the general public on May 6, 2010,[3] the rematch broke the past record of 77,803, set in the opening game of the 2010 IIHF World Championship at Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.[4] "The Big Chill" was confirmed by the Michigan Daily on March 5, 2009,[5] but the two schools did not officially announce the game until January 28, 2010.[6]
The rink was centered in the stadium's playing field so that the red line (center ice) was directly on top of the 50-yard line.[6]

Previous Michigan outdoor games
The Wolverines have played two previous outdoor games in their history, both away from home.
Cold War
Main article: Cold War (ice hockey)The Cold War was held on Saturday, October 6, 2001 between Michigan and Michigan State, held at Michigan State's football venue of Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, which resulted in a 3–3 tie in front of a crowd of 74,544.[7] The match was so successful, it led to the creation of the Heritage Classic, the Winter Classic, and numerous outdoor college hockey games.
Culver's Camp Randall Hockey Classic
On February 6, 2010, Michigan played another hockey rival, the University of Wisconsin, at the Badgers' football home of Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.[8] In an event billed as the Culver's Camp Randall Hockey Classic, Wisconsin won, 3–2, in front of 55,301 fans. Game time temperature was 21 degrees F.[9]
Television
The game was broadcast locally by Fox Sports Detroit and nationally by the Big Ten Network, as well as in Ontario via Leafs TV. The game was available on the internet via Fox Sports Detroit's website, and in Alaska via KFXF.[10]
Pregame Festivities
The University of Michigan spared no expense to make the event as memorable as possible. The University added permanent lighting to Michigan Stadium in time for the event, as lights would be needed due to the time of day during which the game would be played.[11] The University later announced that fireworks would be used when Michigan entered the ice during the game, as well as after every goal.[12] Following the national anthem, a flyover was conducted by a B-2 Stealth Bomber.[10]

After the game ended, a 7 minute fireworks show commenced. Fireworks were shot off from all around the rink on the field, as well as from the roof of the new luxury and press boxes on either side of the field. The fireworks show was conducted in unison with various songs from the soundtrack for the movie The Big Chill.
Game Summary
Michigan wore a vintage jersey for the event, which was worn from 1945 to 1948.[13]
Michigan fired 29 shots of Michigan State goalie Drew Palmisano, while Michigan State fired 34 shots on Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick, who recorded his first shutout of the season and the second of his career.[14]
