It was the final event of six in the 2008–2009 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, a senior-level international invitational competition. It was organized by the Japan Skating Federation. Medals were awarded in four disciplines: men's singles, ladies singles, pair skating, and ice dancing.
In 2008, the NHK Trophy was held in Tokyo, from November 27th through 30th.
The compulsory dance was the Paso Doble.
