It was the third event of six in the 2008–2009 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, a senior-level international invitational competition. It was organized by the Chinese Skating Association. Medals were awarded in four disciplines: men's singles, ladies singles, pair skating, and ice dancing.
In 2008, Cup of China was held in Beijing from November 6th through 9th.
The compulsory dance was the Viennese Waltz.
