The Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is a federally designated metropolitan area composed of three Indiana counties (Allen, Wells, and Whitley) surrounding the city of Fort Wayne. The metropolitan area is a part of the Fort Wayne-Huntington-Auburn Combined Statistical Area (CSA), which also includes Adams, DeKalb, Huntington, and Noble counties. Population

In 2003 the total household population for the MSA was 504,000 - 256,000 (51 percent) females and 247,000 (49 percent) males. The median age was 34.3 years. Twenty-eight percent of the population were under 18 years and 11 percent were 65 years and older.

For people reporting one race alone to the Census, 89 percent were White; 8 percent were Black or African American; less than 0.5 percent were Native American and Alaska Native; 1 percent were Asian; less than 0.5 percent were Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 1 percent were Some other race. One percent reported Two or more races. Four percent of the people in Fort Wayne, IN MSA were Hispanic. Eighty-six percent of the people in Fort Wayne, IN MSA were White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

Households and families

In 2003 there were 196,000 households in Fort Wayne MSA. The average household size was 2.57 people.

Families made up 69 percent of the households in Fort Wayne MSA. This figure includes both married-couple families (51 percent) and other families (18 percent). Non-family households made up 31 percent of all households in the MSA. Most of the non-family households were people living alone, but some were composed of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

In 2003, the Fort Wayne MSA had a total of 215,000 housing units, 8.7 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 72 percent were in single-unit structures, 22 percent were in multi-unit structures, and 5 percent were mobile homes. Nineteen percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

The median monthly housing costs for (specified) mortgaged owners was $889, (specified) non-mortgaged owners $273, and (specified) renters $553. Twenty-four percent of owners with mortgages, 8 percent of owners without mortgages, and 48 percent of renters in the Fort Wayne MSA spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.

Ethnicity

Three percent of the people living in the Fort Wayne MSA in 2003 were foreign born; 97 percent were native, including 76 percent who were born in their state of residence.

Among people at least five years old living in Fort Wayne MSA in 2003, 7 percent spoke a language other than English at home. Of those speaking a language other than English at home, 58 percent spoke Spanish and 42 percent spoke some other language; 46 percent reported that they did not speak English "very well."

Education level

In 2003, 87 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 20 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. Among people 16 to 19 years old, 17 percent were dropouts; they were not enrolled in school and had not graduated from high school.

The total school enrollment in Fort Wayne, IN MSA was 138,000 in 2003. Preprimary school enrollment was 20,000 and elementary or high school enrollment was 93,000 children. College enrollment was 25,000.

Economy

In 2003, for the employed population 16 years and older, the leading industries in the Fort Wayne were manufacturing, 22 percent, and educational, health, and social services, 18 percent.

Among the most common occupations were: Management, professional, and related occupations, 30 percent; Sales and office occupations, 26 percent; Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 21 percent; Service occupations, 15 percent; and Construction, extraction, and maintenance occupations, 8 percent. Eighty-six percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 9 percent were Federal, state, or local government workers; and 5 percent were Self-employed.

Commute

Eighty-six percent of Fort Wayne, IN MSA workers drove to work alone in 2003, 8 percent carpooled, less than 0.5 percent took public transportation, and 2 percent used other means. The remaining 4 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 18 minutes to get to work.

Income levels

The median income of households in the MSA was $40,245. Eighty-three percent of the households received earnings and 15 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Twenty-five percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $13,457. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

Economically disadvantaged

In 2003, 12 percent of people were in poverty. Nineteen percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 6 percent of people 65 years old and over. Nine percent of all families and 27 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.
