Bellport is a village in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 2,363 at the 2000 census. The village is named after the Bell family, early settlers. The public education system in Bellport makes up the South Country Central School District consisting of six schools, three elementary Schools (Kindergarten- Grade 3), Frank P. Long Intermediate School (Grades 4-5), Bellport Middle School (Grades 6-8) and Bellport High School. The Incorporated Village of Bellport is in the Town of Brookhaven and is on the South Shore of Long Island.

Government

The Village of Bellport is an Incorporated Village, which gives a community the ability to govern itself and gain some autonomy from the larger town or county government. The village is governed by 4 trustees and a mayor. Each trustee is elected to a 2-year term, with 2 trustees up for election every year. The mayor is elected to a 2-year term as well. The current trustees are: John Orlando, Lee Snead, Robert "Bob" Lyons, and Sheri Bennington. The mayor of the village is David Pate.

In New York State, a village is separate from the Town or County government of the area. Although the Bellport is within the boundaries of the Town of Brookhaven, it is autonomous from the town. Thus, Bellport is responsible for many local services such as snow removal, road maintenance, and garbage removal. These services are paid for by taxes on property within the boundaries of the village. However, taxes are collected by the Brookhaven Receiver of Taxes. Education is the responsibility of the South Country Central School District, ambulance service is provided by the South Country Ambulance Company, fire service is provided by the Bellport Fire District, and police service is provided by the Suffolk County Police Department.

Current Issues

Recently, the village board voted to allow the construction of a cellphone tower disguised as a flagpole to be built on the golf course. Former mayor Frank Trotta has spoken in support of this decision. However, it should be noted that the mayor opposed such construction in 2005.

History

This former fishing and whaling village became a vacation location and home to the historic [http://www.gatewayplayhouse.com/index.html Gateway Playhouse] . The founding of the [http://www.bellportyc.org/ Bellport Bay Yacht Club] (BBYC) in 1906 exemplifies the rich sailing history of the village. In addition, the South Bay Scooter Club occupies the BBYC building over the winter months.
