It is found in Angola, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Okinawa, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, the United States, Venezuela, the British Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The largest recorded Cubera Snapper in the world was caught off the coast of Freeport, Texas June 23, 1984 by David Fotorny of Houston, Texas. Caught on a hand line the snapper weighed in at 151 pounds. This became a new Unrestricted Tackle record for the state of Texas.
