February 20 ,2004 , Sandoval County became the second jurisdiction in theUnited States (afterSan Francisco ) to issue amarriage license to two women. census GR|2 of 2000, there were 89,908 people, 31,411 households, and 23,621 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 24 people per square mile (9/km²). There were 34,866 housing units at an average density of 9 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 65.08% White, 1.71% Black or African American, 16.28% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 12.37% from other races, and 3.47% from two or more races. 29.40% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 31,411 households out of which 38.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.70% were married couples living together, 12.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% were non-families. 19.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.29.
In the county the population was spread out with 29.60% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 30.10% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $44,949, and the median income for a family was $48,984. Males had a median income of $36,791 versus $26,565 for females. The
