According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 945
square mile s (2,447km² ), of which, 933 square miles (2,415 km²) of it is land and 12 square miles (32 km²) of it (1.30%) is water. The primary stream of the county is Otter Creek, which runs through the county from the south to the north.Adjacent counties

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 63,400 people, 25,678 households, and 16,742 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 68 people per square mile (26/km²). There were 32,311 housing units at an average density of 35 per square mile (13/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 90.07% White, 0.98% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 15.8% were of Irish, 13.8% English, 13.2% French, 9.9% American, 9.6% Italian, 6.3% German, 5.8% Polish and 5.3%French Canadian ancestry according toCensus 2000 . 95.6% spoke English, 1.4% French and 1.2% Spanish as their first language.There were 25,678 households out of which 29.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.30% were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.80% were non-families. 27.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $36,743, and the median income for a family was $44,742. Males had a median income of $31,094 versus $23,964 for females. The
