Population: 35,994 (2010 est.);[2] 39,981 (2002 Census);[1] 38,793 (1989 Census).[4] It was founded in 1955 after the discovery of a nearby kimberlite pipe by expedition led by Yuri Khabardin; it has had town status since 1959.
The town is served by Mirny Airport.
There is a massive diamond pit in the town. It is 525 m (1,722 ft) deep and has a diameter of 1.25 kilometers (0.78 mi).
The Mirny Polytechnic Institute, a branch of Sakha (Yakutsk) State University, is located in the town.
