Soviet Census (1989)

Soviet Census (1989)

The 1989 Soviet Census was the final and most comprehensive census taken within the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Findings

The census officially recorded the population of the USSR at 286,717,000, making it the third most populous country in the world. Of the whole population, about 51% lived in the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic, making it the most populous of the Soviet Rupublics. The only other republic to house a large percent of the Soviet population was the Ukrainian SSR, while the rest of the republics had less than 10% of the Soviet population occupying them. About 66% of the population was urban, a sharp increase from the 1970s.
