Narayanavanam is a census town and mandal headquarters in Chittoor district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Geography

Narayanavanam is located at 13°25′N 79°35′E / 13.42°N 79.58°E / 13.42; 79.58.[1] It has an average elevation of 122 metres (400 feet).

Narayanavanam is just 35 km away from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India and 95 km away from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is just 5 km away from Puttur, point of departure for buses to the temple town Narayanavanam. From Narayanavanam you can go to Kona Falls.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Narayanavanam had a population of 10,965. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Narayanavanam has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 63%. In Narayanavanam, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

History

At one time Narayanavaram was the Capital of the Karvetinagar Suryavamsa Raja's. It is considered a holy city because of the presence of Sri Padmavathi Sametha Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple(Now maintained by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, Tirupati). Local legend states it is the place where lord Venkateswara swamy married goddess Padmavati. King Akasaraju had a son and daughter. The daughter’s name was Sri Padmavati, who fell in love with Lord Venkateswara Swamy and was married to him. Since the Marriage was done in Narayanavaram, Padmavathi’s brother build two Temples; one is here, another in Tirumala to commemorate this occasion. This is the temple where in we can see both Venkateswara Swamy along with Padmavathi Devi in one temple complex. In narayanavanam and the surroundings there are some ancient fort statues are present. these are calling local people as akasha maha raju kota. The fort statues are in inside of land just 7 feet below the road. This fort is present in back side of avanakshi amma temple. This and there are olden days fort security walls are present in surrounding mountains of puttur and narayanavanam. Now also we can see rocks at mountains. These stones are black in colour. Narayanavanam is also famous for manufacturing lungis, shirts, Churidhars. This place is famous for handlooms.

Connectivity

Nearest railway station is Puttur (5 km). Puttur is well Connected by trains and buses with many Indian cities like Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hospet, Mysore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Tirupati, Vellore etc. Buses, plying from Chennai to Tirupati, pass through Narayanavanam (or through bypass)
