As of 2007 , Puttur has a population of approx 90,000. Puttur has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 64%. In Puttur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. Telugu and Tamil are widely spoken here.The World famous "Natural Bone Setting" Hospital is located here. From ancient days, broken bones are set by Herbal leaves without operation, as it is one of the oldest procedure which gained popularity by the people all over the world. Though called puttur bone setters,this hospital is actually located in rachapalem a village near puttur. A family of kshatriyas found out this unique procedure and their descendants are still responsible for the management of this hospital.
And the first Railway Track in Andhra Pradesh was built between Puttur and Renigunta.
While laying the railway track, Tamil workers called this place as "PUDHU OORU" which means "NEW PLACE". In due course of time, this name was changed to "PUTTURU" by the Telugu people in and around this place.

Festivals in Puttur
The local festival called Thirunallu is celebrated in the month of August every year for 5 days. The whole town of Puttur will wear a festive look during the festival. The Car Festival is most important part of Thirunallu. The huge car will be decorated and taken across the important streets of Puttur. Also, a small exhibition and shandy will take place on those days, entertaining the people. In the shandy, people will be seen buying small toys, decorating items, cosmetics, and home appliances.
