It was developed by New World Properties — a development arm of Coles-Myer and opened in April 1984. The centre was originally anchored by a Super Kmart, however this now operates separately as a Coles Supermarket and Kmart. The centre was recently ranked 21 out of 160 shopping centres in Australia with a Gross Leasable Area (GLA) of less than 20,000 square metres (220,000 sq ft).
In 1994, Deepwater Plaza expanded to accommodate a Franklins supermarket, Lowes Menswear, Bakers Delight, Michel's Patisserie and Lay Anne Handcrafts. Additional traders to the plaza at this time were Best & Less, The Reject Shop, Millers, Newcastle Permanent, Commonwealth Bank and passion Hair & beauty. The centre is owned by Schwartz Family Co Pty Ltd, is managed by Savills Australia and has 4 million visitors annually.
