Career
Early years
The first football steps Basta made, occurred when he was eight in local football club PKB from Padinska Skela, the suburb where he lived and where he was born. He came in Red Star at his thirteen and in time he became the part one of the most talented generation in history of Red Star's youth academy.
Red Star
First professional contract he signed with 17 years, when he together with few teammates from youth team came in first team. For first team he debuted on his 18th birthday, August 2002 in defeat from Sutjeska in Nikšić(1:0). In the second season, he played on loan in Jedinstvo Ub (along with Aleksandar Luković). He emphasized himself with great technique skills and accuracy for long throws and very soon he became one of the most important players for Red Star Belgrade. In April 2005 he injured his left hand, the injury was so bad that he was not playing for five months. Basta won six trophies with Red Star Belgrade, including three domestic doubles.
Udinese
In July 2008 he moved from Red Star Belgrade to Udinese. He played in pre-season friendlies. But Udinese did not wish to use its one of the two non-EU registration quota on Basta, and Basta went to Lecce on loan from Red Star Belgrade,[1] in order to borrow the quota from Lecce, likes his team-mate and countryman Aleksandar Luković.
Returned to Udinese in summer 2009, he became the starting right-wingback since the 6th matches instead of midfielder. He made his debut on 23 September 2009 (the 5th matches), he substituted Mauricio Isla in 27 minutes for same position. The match Udinese won A.C. Milan 1–0. After injuries of Simone Pepe, he played as a right midfielder in their 3–5–2 formation, for a few matches.
He then injured and missed whole 2010-11 Serie A season.
Basta made his return after 1½seasons, on 11 September, the round 1 of 2011–12 Serie A, that match the coach rested Mauricio Isla (ailing, but in fact due to team tactic and back from international duty) and Basta was the right wing-back in 3–5–2 formation. He scored a goal, winning Lecce 2–0. In the next match, the first group stage match of 2011–12 UEFA Europa League, Basta returned to bench as Isla started (who secured the right wing-back place for recent seasons since Basta injury). On 6 November 2011, Basta scored the first goal in a 2-1 victory against A.C. Siena.
International career
For A team of Serbia he played two times. He debuted for his country against Spain on 31 March 2005.[2] He substituted Ognjen Koroman in 77 minutes. He collected his second cap in Tunisia.[3]
He was in Serbia and Montenegro team for World Cup in Germany, but he did not play. For U21's selection of Serbia he played 18 games and he played on two European Under-21 Football Championship, First time in Portugal 2006 he reached semifinal, second time he became losing finalists in the Netherlands 2007. He was called-up by the caretaker of the Serbia national football team, Radovan Ćurčić, for two friendly matches, against Mexico and Honduras, as a replacement for the injured Neven Subotić. Shortly after being called-up, he suffered injury as well. Ćurčić called-up Nemanja Tomić, Adem Ljajić and Andrija Kaluđerović instead.
