Colorado Technical College was established in 1965 with a focus on training former military personnel in technical and vocational subjects. In 1995, the institution gained university status and changed its name to Colorado Technical University.[3] In March 1996, the school was acquired by Whitman Education Group, Inc. On July 1, 2003, Career Education Corporation merged with competitor Whitman Education Group, Inc., becoming the owner of Colorado Technical University.[4]

Presently, the university maintains Colorado campuses in Colorado Springs (main campus), Denver, Pueblo, and Westminster, as well as out-of-state campuses in North Kansas City, Missouri and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Additionally, a number of CTU's degree programs can be completed entirely or largely online.[5]
