Area code 203 is a telephone area code that covers the southwestern part of Connecticut. The area code stretches from the state's western border, along its southern coast, to beyond the city of New Haven, and ends just south of Hartford. (The rest of Connecticut is served by the 860 area code.)

Proposed area code overlay

The CT Public Utility commission in August 1999 proposed an area code overlay for the 203 area code. A date for implementing the new overlay area code has yet to be determined; however, in September 2008 it was announced that the 475 area code will overlay 203 within two years.
