state ofNew York telephone area code . It is the area code for Westchester County, including the cities of Yonkers and Rye. It was one of the original area codes established in October,1947 .Until
2000 , the 914 area code also served the counties of Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, and Delaware, in addition to Westchester. However, due to the growing popularity and commercialization ofcell phones andinternet dial-up connections, the area code was split onJune 5 ,2000 with Westchester retaining 914, and the remaining counties receiving the new area code of 845.In addition to the aforementioned counties, 914 also carried the
Long Island counties of Nassau and Suffolk until the 516 area code was given to Long Island in 1951.Since 2004, a block of numbers used by MCI has also been used in the
Green Zone ofBaghdad ,Iraq to provide United States government officials and humanitarian workers access to "local" calls.
