The Dominion Tankard

The Dominion Tankard

The Dominion Tankard is the Southern Ontario provincial championship for men's curling. The winner represents Team Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier. Listed below are the list of Ontario's representatives at the Brier that year. Brier champions indicated in bold. From 1927 to 1931, the Toronto area also sent a team to the Brier. The tournament is overseen by the Ontario Curling Association. The event is sponsored by The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company.

Northern Ontario has its own provincial championship, known as the Dominion of Canada Northern Ontario Men's Curling Championship.

Qualification

The Tankard is usually a ten-team event, however if the reigning provincial champion won the Brier the previous year, they receive an automatic bye into the Tankard, and it expands to 11 teams (such as in 2008). Eight of the teams qualify through regional playdowns (2 from each region) and the remaining 2 come from a challenge round. Each regional playdown themselves consist of eight teams, two from each zone of which each region has four of. Zone playdowns can have an unlimited number of teams.

During the Tankard, each team plays each other team once. The top four teams make the playoffs, in which the page playoff system is used.
