Biography
Nicolaus Bergensköld was born in Småland, Sweden in 1838. He studied for the ministry at Fjellstedt school in Uppsala. From a early age he had been a deciple of Rosenius teachings. After completing his education, he served as a preacher at Överums bruk in Småland under the guidance of another deciple of Rosenius, a count Stackelberg. In 1867 He emigrated from Sweden to the United States. There he first settled in Galesburg, Illinois. Many people wanted him to preach in the church there, but because of his association with Rosenius, the pastor of the congregation refused him. However, Bergensköld's friends, several of whom were on the board of deacons, arranged private devotional services, led by Bergensköld. Eventually the conflict led too a split in the church, and the formation of a mission society modeled on those in Sweden. One of the first of its kind in the United states.[1]
Bergensköld left Galesburg for Iowa in april of 1869 and was succeeded by a reverend Carl Anderson. Some years later, in 1873, Bergensköld moved to the swedish colony in Marshall County, Kansas where he again helped set up a new mission society.[2] Finally, he again moved back to Buena Vista County, Iowa where he took over as minister of a newly established congregation. A post he served between 1877 and 1881.[3]
