- Guðbrandur Þorláksson
Guðbrandur Þorláksson or Gudbrandur Thorlaksson (1541 –
July 20 ,1627 ) was a mathematician, cartographer andbishop inHólar ,Iceland . He studied at the cathedral school at Hólar and theUniversity of Copenhagen , and was successively rector of the school atSkálholt , minister atBreiðabólstaður and bishop of Hólar until his death onJuly 20 ,1627 .He edited and published at least 80 books while he was bishop, including the
Bible in Icelandic and theIcelandic Lawbook orlegal code . He is also noted for having drawn the first good map of Iceland, in 1590.He had at least one child, a daughter named Steinunn, born in 1571 to Guðrún Gísladóttir.
He is pictured on the now obsolete Icelandic 50 króna banknote.
