Mount Tremper, New York

Mount Tremper is a populated place in Ulster County, New York, USA. Mount Tremper is situated to the east of New York State Route 28 and to the north of New York State Route 212 within the Catskill Park. The community is located at 42°02′41″N 74°16′32″W / 42.04472°N 74.27556°W / 42.04472; -74.27556.[1] It is named for nearby Mount Tremper.

Among the cultural attractions in the area is Mount Tremper Arts, a non-profit organization that supports contemporary artists in the creation and presentation of new works of art. Founded by photographer Mathew Pokoik and choreographer Aynsley Vandenbroucke, MTA features performances, exhibitions, artist residencies, educational programming, and informal gatherings.

Mount Tremper is also the site of Zen Mountain Monastery, the main house of the Mountains and Rivers order of Zen Buddhism, founded by John Daido Loori, Roshi.

This small hamlet boasts many year round lodging establishments and eclectic dining opportunities including:Kate's Lazy Meadow, a motel owned by Kate Pierson, one of the founding members of The B-52s. In addition these businesses have each thrived for over 25 years: Tiso's is a family owned Italian Trattoria founded by son Joseph's father Joe and mother Sue Tiso; La Dutchesse Anne [1]is a French Bistro and hotel operated by Fabrice Vittoz and owned by Martine Baum who was the original proprietor with her husband Bruce ; Catskill Rose Lodging and Dining [2]has American fare from chefs and owners, husband and wife team of Peter DiSclafani and Rose-Marie Dorn. And a relative newcomer the Emerson Spa Resort[3] boasts the Phoenix restaurant with Asian influences.The Emerson is owned by Emily Fisher and Dean Gitter and managed by Naomi Umhey.

Another prominent and famous attraction is the “Kaatskill Kaleidoscope”, the world’s largest kaleidoscope, measuring 60 feet (18m) tall. It is mounted inside a converted grain silo. And not to be missed is the trail head to the Mount Tremper Fire tower[4], built circa 1917, was used for fire observation until 1971.The 47' tower was re-opened on June 9, 2001
