Pine Hill is located in the western part of the Town of Shandaken.

History

Pine Hill became an important tourist community when the Ulster and Delaware Railroad railroad reached it in 1872. It was known as the "Saratoga" of the Catskills. In 1895, Pine Hill became an incorporated village, but the village dissolved its incorporation in 1986, becoming an unincorporated entity (hamlet).

Geography

Pine Hill is located at coor dms|42|8|3|N|74|28|41|W|city (42.134198, -74.478120)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²).5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.47% is water.

The community is inside the Catskill Park.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 308 people, 138 households, and 81 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 146.2 per square mile (56.4/km²). There were 279 housing units at an average density of 132.4/sq mi (51.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 89.94% White, 2.60% African American, 0.65% Native American, 3.57% Asian, 2.27% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.87% of the population.

There were 138 households out of which 21.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.77.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 30.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $33,229, and the median income for a family was $40,625. Males had a median income of $46,000 versus $25,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,858. About 10.1% of families and 19.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.5% of those under the age of eighteen and 9.5% of those sixty five or over.
