Myrtia or Myrtea, (Greek: Μυρτιά or Μυρτέα) is a village in the municipality of Pyrgos, Elis, Greece. As of 2001, it had a population of 788. Located between the Gulf of Corinth and the GR-8 (Athens - Corinth - Patras).

Location

Myrtia is located 90 km east from Patras, 2 km west from the old GR-9/E55 (Patras - Pyrgos - Kyparissia), 11 km northwest of Pyrgos, about 20 km south of Amaliada, 30 km WNW of Olympia, 75 km north of Kyparissia and about 12 km ENE of Katakolo. They are intersected with two roads connecting Katakolo and Amaliada and Chanakia and its nearest beach.

Geography and history

The village is situated in a valley area filled with farms and consists of fruits, vegetables, livestock, dairy, olives and other crops. The northern portion are mountainous and are partly forested.

Myrtia was ruled until by the Ottomans until the Greek War of Independence of 1821. It adopted its current name in the 20th century.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt and emigration occurred at a higher rate until 1981 through to 1991, it became one of the few villages in mountainous Achaia to regain is population. Dessino became connected with asphalt in the 2000s. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. In 1997, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of Pyrgos.

Today, it is a village with a few inhabitants, it is populated during the summer months. The population depends on olive and cattle productions.
