Route description
The two-state highway begins as NY 71 at an intersection with NY 22 in Green River, a hamlet within the town of Hillsdale in Columbia County, New York. NY 71 heads southeastward from this point, following the Green River through a mountainous area to the Massachusetts state line, where it becomes Route 71. From the state line, Route 71 runs southeast through Alford and Egremont before ending at a junction with Route 23 and Route 41 in Great Barrington.
History
In the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, the New York portion of the Green River – Great Barrington highway was designated as NY 71.[5] The Massachusetts half was designated as Route 69 ca. 1932.[6][7] Route 69 was renumbered to Route 71 ca. 1939 to match the New York designation.[3][4]
Route 71 brings the Henry Knox Trail into Massachusetts. The trail joins Route 23 at its end.
