The route is mainly downhill during its length and was assigned entirely by 1931. Vermont Route 346, was originally Vermont Route 112 until being renumbered to match the border highway.Route description
NY 346
Route 346 begins at an intersection with NY 22 outside the hills of the Rensselaer County state forest. Much of the beginning of 346 is going downhill out of North Petersburgh. The highway crosses a creek and intersects with County Route 95, a road which leads to Mount Anthony. NY 346 parallels County Route 96 on the other side of the creek and passes to the south of Mount Anthony, where it crosses the state line into
Vermont and becomes Vermont Route 346. The 346 designation, after crossing into Vermont, begins by paralleling Indian Massacre Road, the continuation of Rensselaer County Route 96. Not too far after crossing the border, VT 346 crosses railroad tracks and intersects with the eastern terminus of Indian Massacre Road. The highway continues with the railroad tracks of the Troy–Greenfield Railroad line [cite map|url=http://www.pownal.org/PHS/Land/MapNorthPownal1856.html|title=North Pownal|publisher=Pownal, Vermont|accessdate=2008-09-12] , a multi-state railroad line, [cite book|url=http://books.google.com/books?id=pVkOAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA542&lpg=PA542&dq=Troy-Greenfield+Railroad&source=web&ots=-fTWem2exL&sig=msCX6YBtWTMDS--tMNZKC9LHW1A&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result|page=542|title=Journal of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts|date=1885|accessdate=2008-09-20] as it continues into North Pownal. There is an intersection with North Pownal Road, where VT 346 turns southward. As the highway heads southward, it continues with the railroad tracks into the outskirts of North Pownal. South of North Pownal, Route 346 climbs through a short stretch of mountains that block the view of New York.
There are a few local roads in the area, most of which access Reservoir Hollow and Halifax Hollow. After Cedar Hill Road, Route 346 begins to follow the parallel
U.S. Route 7 (the Ethan Allen Highway). Township Highway 8 intersects as the highway approaches Pownal, continuing southward into the town. Passing Ellis Mine Hollow and Frost Hollow, Route 346 terminates at an intersection with US 7 in Pownal.cite map|url=http://maps.google.com/maps?q=from%3A%20Rte%20346%20%26%20Rte%20346%2C%20United%20States%20to%3AUS-7%20%26%20VT-346%2C%20Pownal%2C%20Bennington%2C%20Vermont%2005261%2C%20United%20States&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wl|title=Overview map of VT 346|publisher=Google Maps|cartography=NAVTEQ Inc.|accessdate=2008-09-12|date=2008] Vermont Route 346 averages 2300 drivers each year, with the most recent being 2006.History
The enitre stretch of New York State Route 346 was numbered and set by 1931. [cite map |title=Road Map & Historical Guide - New York |publisher=
Sun Oil Company |year=1935 |cartography=Rand McNally and Company ] However, the designation on the Vermont side was different when first assigned. On the other side of the border, Vermont Route 346 was known as Vermont Route 112. However, by 1965, VT 112 had been renumbered, and Vermont Route 346 had come into existance. The route now matched up at the border, becoming a continuation of each other.Major intersections
