Balthor Rockfist

A legendary warrior dwarf from Otaria. Balthor did not feel at home with his brethren, and so left to live with the human barbarians of the Pardic Mountains. He trained generations of barbarians, including the sibling warriors Kamahl and Jeska.

When Kamahl returned to the Pardic Mountains with the Mirari and declared his intent to unite the tribes, Balthor went along with his plan out of a sense of deep loyalty. His stubbornness frustrated Jeska, who had to render him unconscious in order to reach her brother. However, Kamahl was told that she had killed him and struck Jeska down. Accompanying Kamahl on his mission to seek help in Krosa, Balthor was killed in a fight with Laquatus's latest "jack" Burke (Laquatus's Champion) despite slaying it; a feat both Laquatus and Chainer (Burke's creator) had thought impossible. He was reanimated as a zombie slave of Braids to kill Laquatus. However, because of the piece of Burke still lodged in the undead dwarf's throat, Laquatus gained control of him and ordered him to fight Kamahl. At the last, Balthor partially regained his memories and intentionally gave Kamahl an opening to destroy him.

During Kamahl's exile in the mutated Krosan Forest, Balthor appears again (as a ghost) to guide the fallen warrior into taking the Mirari Sword to defeat Karona. Along the way, Kamahl loses his temper with the spectral Balthor and slices him with the sword, eliminating his mentor from existence. (Balthor the Stout, Balthor the Defiled) (Torment)

After Ith’s escape and victory over Mairsil, Barl was turned into a Rag Man destined to serve Ith forever. Although the card Dark Sphere suggests otherwise, it is made clear in the book The Gathering Dark that Barl and Ith are two different persons. This was actually a result of the book's author misconstruing the attribution on the card—originally "Barl, Lord Ith"--as "Barl, to Ith". (Cards: Barl's Cage, Dark Sphere)

Barrin

Wise and ancient Tolarian wizard, originally hailing as a scribe named Barrinelos from Kjeld. He was friends with Urza and together they created the Academy of Tolaria. He usually served as Urza's conscience and human relations figure. Barrin was married to chancellor Rayne, and fathered Hanna. When Barrin discovered the death of his daughter, he would realize belatedly that he fought for Urza so much that he let his wife and daughter slip away from him. Leaving Urza for the last time, Barrin went back to Tolaria to battle the Phyrexians for the graves of his family, fighting a final battle he believed in. Hugging his daughter, Barrin's last spell obliterated everything on Tolaria. Barrin was one of the most powerful mortals in the setting, able to singlehandedly take on entire armies. He chose to start life over as a merchant, using his wealth to dote upon his daughter Nunnieve. She eventually became ill and died, causing Crucias to drink himself into a stupor before building a ship in her honor, which cost him more than he had. To settle his debt, he became a part-time tour guide to the shores of Argoth where Urza and Mishra fought until he and his ship were caught in the explosive aftermath of The Brothers War, when he became a planeswalker.

During the Phyrexian Invasion, Bo Levar was chosen to pilot one of Urza's titans during his assault on Phyrexia.

Braids

A legendary dementia summoner, also known in the Odyssey Cycle as "Fulla". Full of twisted malevolent glee, she had an extensive role in the Otarian series. It was said that Braids was the cabalist who lasted the longest of all the dementia summoners from creating the Cabal's signature Dementia Horrors, making her the Patriarch's main asset. During the Onslaught Cycle, she was given the task of providing the showmanship performances in the Grand Coliseum, even appearing during the Battle for Locus. During the aftermath, she sustained many injuries and was delirious in the desert oasis for a many days until she was rescued by Akroma, who brainwashed her into defecting and fighting for the angel's cause. She returned to Aphetto City after being taken by her rescuers who brought her back to her "senses", just in time when Phage gave birth to Kuberr. The Patriarch was about to slay her when Braids spewed a monster who (miraculously) killed him. Braids eventually became the head general of the Cabal force that was sent out to take Karona, in order to make her the prime attraction in the pits. Even though Braids was too mad to be enthralled by the Mirari, she fell under the influence of Karona, and used her dementia powers to sprint through the air and come face-to-face with the false god. Karona, who was experimenting with her powers, had just made the earth disappear, and busy with figuring out how to fix it, she swatted Braids aside. Braids was busy using her powers to leap back from the hole when Karona filled it with earth, burying her alive. Knowing her death was imminent, she withdrew into her dementia world one last time, where the demons of her mind were waiting with grinning fangs and open claws.
