Founded in 2006, it champions public speaking in all areas of society: commercial, voluntary sector, societies and clubs and individual personal development. Effective public speaking and good verbal communication are therefore placed at the core of all its training programmes which range from short workshops through tailor-made programmes for individuals and accredited short courses.
The significance of the term College in the title is taken from the root definition of 'a group of people living together under a common set of rules ('con' with; 'lego' law), which captures the idea of educational diversity and lifelong learning. CoPs recognises that communication skills must be honed, studied and refined throughout a lifetime; that it is important to be able to provide recognised qualifications in the field of speaking and presentation; and that excellent communication skills may be seen as a vocational requirement, rather than purely as a business need.
The name College also suggests the more academic elements of 'studying' spoken communication; not just the continuing relevance of the ancient skills of rhetoric, but also being in a position to deliver papers and give advice on the key elements of good communication in modern business.
As well as extensive work in the commercial and private sector, the College of Public Speaking aims to highlight and raise awareness of public speaking as an essential social skill by hosting public events, such as the annual Corporate Challenge aimed at finding the UK's best corporate speaker, as well as hosting the Speaking Olympiad, a team speaking event aimed at encouraging and show-casing speaking talent, by giving a platform for teams from the largest and most established UK speaking organisations. Namely the Association of Speakers Clubs, Toastmasters International and the Society of Cogers to compete across a range of speaking disciplines.
The College of Public Speaking's philanthropic work has in the last few years extended to several pro bono projects with household name charities like Oxfam, Medicins sans Frontieres, Cancer Research UK, Breast Cancer Care, Marie Curie Cancer Care, The Rainbow Trust, 2Care, Media Trust, The Oxford Hub as well as a number of educational establishments like Kings College London, English-Speaking Union, Skoll Emerge Social Entrepreneurship, Oxford and Gordon House, Beckenham.
In 2010 the College of Public Speaking's Corporate Challenge Grand Final was judged by Chris Bates (runner-up The Apprentice 2010) at the English-Speaking Union.
In 2011 the College of Public Speaking will be launching a Diploma in Spoken Communication. It is an interactive open learning qualification designed and provided by the College of Public Speaking. Delivered entirely through the internet, it is open to students worldwide. Accredited by EdExcel (encouraging preliminary talks underway), it entitles those successfully completing all course elements to place the initials Dip.Sp.Comm. after their names.
