Coastal flood advisory

Coastal flood advisory

A Coastal Flood Advisory is issued by the National Weather Service of the United States when coastal flooding along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, or the Gulf of Mexico is occurring or imminent, but does not pose a serious threat to lives or property, but rather will simply pose a nuisance to people in the affected area. The flooding must be due to water being forced from the nearby body of water onto land, and not from rainfall. Nor'easters, hurricanes, tropical storms, and thunderstorms can all lead to the issuance of a Coastal Flood Advisory.[1]

...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 2 PM EST
SATURDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A COASTAL
FLOOD ADVISORY FOR THE EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS COASTLINE...WHICH IS IN
EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 2 PM EST SATURDAY.

THE ADVISORY INCLUDES THE CITIES AND TOWNS OF SALISBURY...NEWBURYPORT...
ALL OF CAPE ANN...COASTLINE OF BOSTON...HULL...COHASSET AND SCITUATE.

LOW PRESSURE WILL RAPIDLY INTENSIFY INTO A POWERFUL STORM SATURDAY
WELL EAST OF CAPE COD. DESPITE ITS DISTANCE OFFSHORE NORTH TO
NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 20 TO 30 MPH LATE TONIGHT AND
CONTINUE INTO SATURDAY. THESE WINDS WILL YIELD A STORM SURGE OF 1.5
FT TO PERHAPS AS MUCH AS 2.0 FT. THESE SURGE VALUES WILL COMBINE WITH
VERY HIGH ASTRONOMICAL TIDES TO PRODUCE STORM TIDES AT OR ABOVE FLOOD
STAGE ACROSS MUCH OF THE EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS SHORELINE. IN
ADDITION...MODEST SEAS JUST OFFSHORE OF 5 TO 8 FEET WILL RESULT IN BREAKING
WAVES OVER SEAWALLS AND OTHER COASTAL BARRIERS. THIS WILL ALSO YIELD
SOME BEACH EROSION.

THIS WILL RESULT IN WIDESPREAD MINOR COASTAL FLOODING WITH POCKETS OF
MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING. THIS WILL TRANSLATE TO MANY SHORE ROADS
PARTIALLY FLOODED ALONG WITH A FEW ROAD CLOSURES. THE MOST VULNERABLE
LOCATIONS WILL BE NORTHEAST FACING SHORELINES. WE ARE NOT EXPECTING
MAJOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE GIVEN THE LACK LARGE WAVE ACTION OFFSHORE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY IS ISSUED FOR MINOR COASTAL FLOODING OF
THE MOST VULNERABLE SHORE ROADS AND/OR BASEMENTS DUE TO THE
HEIGHT OF STORM TIDE OR WAVE SPLASHOVER. THE MAJORITY OF ROADS
REMAIN PASSABLE WITH ONLY ISOLATED CLOSURES. THERE IS NO
SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO LIFE AND ANY IMPACT ON PROPERTY IS MINIMAL.

ALL TIDE HEIGHTS ARE RELATIVE TO MEAN LOWER LOW WATER.
