Blizzard warning

A Blizzard Warning is an advisory issued by the National Weather Service of the United States which means winds of 35 mph (56 km/h) or greater, mixed with heavy snow is forecast for a period of 3 hours or more. A blizzard tends to reduce visibilities to 1/4 of a mile (400 m) or less. In most cases temperatures below 20°F is an additional criteria for blizzard classification. A Severe Blizzard Warning is a variety issued is some cases of winds above 45 mph/72 km/h and temperatures below 10°F/-12°C. Many local weather offices will activate the Emergency Alert System and broadcast the alarm tone on relevant NOAA Weather Radio stations for both varieties of warning.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NORTHERN INDIANA HAS ISSUED ABLIZZARD WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST /6 AM CST/WEDNESDAY. THE WINTER STORM WARNING HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

A COMBINATION OF HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS WILL RESULTIN BLIZZARD CONDITIONS DEVELOPING OVER MUCH OF NORTHERN INDIANAAND NORTHWEST OHIO TODAY AND TONIGHT. IN ADDITION IT WILL BE VERYCOLD WITH WIND CHILLS FALLING BELOW ZERO BY THIS AFTERNOON ANDCONTINUING TONIGHT. STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS AREEXPECTED TO RANGE FROM 10 TO 15 INCHES WITH HEAVIEST AMOUNTS OVERSOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE AREA.

A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS AREEXPECTED OR OCCURRING. FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDSAND POOR VISIBILITIES ARE LIKELY. THIS WILL LEAD TO WHITEOUTCONDITIONS AND SOME ROADS BECOMING IMPASSABLE DUE TO DRIFTINGSNOW...MAKING TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DO NOT TRAVEL. IF YOUMUST...HAVE A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT WITH YOU.
