NOMA[1][2] is a large mixed-use development in Manchester which is due to open in 2012, and will be home to The Co-operative Group. It is the largest development project in the North West England ahead of developments such as MediaCityUK and Atlantic Gateway and overall is the largest development outside the South East England.[3]

The development focuses on revitalising the north of Manchester city centre which has not undergone the redevelopment seen in other central areas of the city. The Co-operative Group, who have been based in the Manchester area since their inception in 1863, hope the development will attract more companies to invest in Manchester and solidify their future in the city.

Background

Name

The new Co-operative headquarters under construction

It was announced in March 2011 that the development would be referred to as NOMA, an acronym for North Manchester. Inspiration for the branding was taken from SOMA (South of Market) in San Francisco[4] which has been redeveloped in the last three decades.

Location

NOMA will be situated in the north of Manchester City Centre over a 20 acre site. The development will be adjacent to Balloon Street and Miller Street where the Co-operative Group has been based since inception in 1963. NOMA will solidify The Co-operative Group's presence in the city.[5] Objections have been raised regarding the relocation of an inner ring road which travel past Angel Meadow.[6]

Buildings

The Co-operative Group headquarters

NOMA will include a new head office for The Co-operative Group with a building that has been architecturally compared to a sliced egg.[7] The Coop will retain financial service offices in Miller Street at the CIS Tower when NOMA opens in 2012. Construction work on the new head office building began in July 2010 which will involve 4,000 workers from 90 companies.[8] The building will utilise an open plan office design and will have 325,000 sq ft of space.[8]

Future buildings

An international architecture competition was launched in 2010[9], inviting building proposals for NOMA.[10]
