Parrs Wood

Parrswood is an area in South Manchester, South East of Didsbury, at one end of Wilmslow Road.

History

Historically, the land that comprises Parrs Wood was the estate of many families including the Farringtons but was bought by Manchester City Council in 1926, to enable the A34 (Kingsway) to be built. The house - Parrs Wood House - survives as a Grade I* listed building, and lies within the grounds of the modern Parrs Wood High School and the Parrswood Rural Studies Centre which is part of the school

Present day

Parrs Wood is home to Parrs Wood High School and Sixth Form Centre, a Tesco supermarket, and Parrs Wood Entertainment Centre.

Parrs Wood House, now the Music Department of the school, and the Parrs Wood Rural Studies Centre remain, but the land on which the old Parrs Wood High School stood was leased to the company who built the Entertainment Centre who, in exchange, built the new premises for the £12million High School at no cost to the local authority. Attractions and businesses in the Entertainment Centre include a Tenpin Bowling, Cineworld Cinema, Burger King, Buckingham Bingo, Frankie & Benny's American Italian restaurant, Virgin Active Health club, Nando's, Chiquito, Pizza Hut and American Pool and Arcade.

Parrs Wood Celtic FC also offer amateur Saturday afternoon football. Members of the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur Football League they play their home games on Parrs Wood High Schools own football pitches.
