Digital television

WTHI-DT broadcasts on digital channel 10.

This station's digital signal is multiplexed:

Channel Video Aspect Programming
10.1 1080i 16:9 Main WTHI-TV programming / CBS HD
10.2 480i 4:3 "MyFox10"

WTHI-DT2 originally featured a live 24-hour feed of Storm Team 10 Fury Radar with audio provided by the NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards station for the Terre Haute area, WXK72. On October 25, 2010, the station replaced the radar/weather radio audio channel airing on its digital subchannel 10.2 with the music video network TheCoolTV as part of LIN's agreement to carry the network across many of their stations.[1] However within days viewer feedback suggested the radar channel was appreciated, and on November 5, 2010, WTHI relaunched it on channel 10.3, while retaining theCoolTV on 10.2.[2][3]

On August 25, 2011, it was announced that WTHI signed affiliation agreements with Fox and MyNetworkTV, which will both begin broadcasting on WTHI's second digital subchannel on September 1, 2011; the market's current affiliate WAWV-TV will revert back to an ABC affiliate on that date. WTHI-TV will become the third LIN Media station to carry a major network affiliation on both the main channel and a digital subchannel (LIN-owned NBC affiliate WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Fox affiliate WNAC-TV in Providence, Rhode Island, owned by Super Towers, Inc. and operated by LIN, both carry MyNetworkTV on a second digital subchannel).[4]

Branded as "MyFox 10", WTHI-DT2 will carry Fox primetime programming from 8-10 p.m. ET/7-9 p.m. CT, while MyNetworkTV programming airs on a tape delay from 11 p.m.-1:00 a.m. ET/10 p.m.-12:00 a.m. CT[5]; WTHI-DT2 is the Terre Haute market's first television outlet for the MyNetworkTV programming service, as prior to the channel affiliating with the programming service has been one of the few markets without a MyNetworkTV affiliate since it launched in September 2006. As a result of the new dual affiliations, WTHI no longer carries programming from TheCoolTV. On the same day that Fox and MyNetworkTV programming begins airing on WTHI-DT2, the subchannel will debut a new 30-minute primetime weeknight-only newscast at 10 p.m.[6][7][8] To preserve bandwidth for the MyFox10 channel on 10.2, the live feed of Storm Team 10 Fury Radar was removed for the second time on August 31, 2011.

History

WTHI-TV began operations on July 22, 1954. It served as the market's only television station until 1965, when WTWO went on the air; as a result, the station initially carried programming from all four networks, though its primary affiliation has always been with CBS. It lost DuMont when the network closed in 1956, lost NBC upon WTWO's launch, and lost ABC when WIIL-TV (now WAWV-TV) signed on in 1973. WTHI also carried some UPN programming during that network's existence.

The station was founded by local businessman and Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony Hulman, who also owned WTHI radio (1480 AM, now WPFR, and 99.9 FM). His family owned the station until 1998, when it was sold to Emmis Communications.[9] Emmis, in turn, sold the station to LIN TV in August 2005. LIN also owns three other CBS affiliates in Indiana (including WISH-TV in Indianapolis).

Local programs of the past featured Jerry Van Dyke of Coach and My Mother the Car fame, and "Captain Jack" Hanes, whose most famous guest was Larry Bird.

WTHI-TV's current studio building in downtown Terre Haute, which is shared with former sister stations WTHI-FM and WWVR (which remain owned by Emmis Communications), will be demolished in 2012 to accommodate parking for a new office building to be constructed nearby.[10] The building was constructed as a garment factory in 1906, but has housed WTHI-TV and WTHI-FM since 1954.[11] The station will relocate to a new location,[10] which it intends to find elsewhere in the downtown area;[12] this will completely separate WTHI-TV from WTHI-FM,[11] which will move into the new office building.[10]

News operation

Local news has been in existence since the station's inception. The newscast was known during the late 1970s and early 1980s as NewsCenter 10. The title was changed to Action 10 News in 1985, and modified to Action 10 News WTHI in 2001. On September 18, 2006, the branding was changed to News 10. A new logo and graphics package was also premiered. The news graphics they choose were the old Gannett graphics. It is currently the only station in the country to use the mid-2000s era Gannett graphics from broadcast graphic design company Giant Octopus.

On April 5, 2011 David Wire announced on News 10 This Morning that it would be his last morning as the morning/midday weather anchor. He was promoted to chief meteorologist, after Kevin Orpurt stepped down. Kevin is still with WTHI-TV as the midday weather anchor and weekend weather anchor. Pamela Gardener takes the morning shift.

Until September 12, 2011, WTHI-TV did not air local newscasts weeknights in the 5 p.m. timeslot, unlike most CBS affiliates in the Eastern Time Zone. On that date WTHI debuted a new half-hour 5 p.m. newscast; the newscast replaced the daytime talk show Dr. Phil, which moved to NBC affiliate WTWO, whose 5 p.m. newscast was moved to its sister station WAWV-TV, which switched its affiliation from Fox to ABC on September 1. The syndicated entertainment newsmagazine Inside Edition fills the remaining half-hour before the 6 p.m. newscast.[13]
