"NewsCenter" ("NotiCentro" in Spanish) is the name given to a number of local-news operations at American
television stations .The name was first used in 1967 by
WAPA-TV in San Juan,Puerto Rico as "NotiCentro", and later in 1972 on ABC affiliateWCVB in Boston when it began operations. The name later spread to severalNBC owned-and-operated station s, which then encouraged other affiliates of NBC (and other networks) to use the title.Similar titles were also used on newscasts in other countries.
Brazil 's SBT used "Noticentro" (a Portuguese derivation of "NewsCenter") for its national newscast from 1981 to 1988. The Spanish name Noticentro was used in many Latin American countries. InAustralia , the name "News Centre" was used by theNine Network in the 1970s (as "News Centre Nine") inSydney andMelbourne , and by BTV-6 in Ballarat, now a part ofWIN Television , in the 1980s (as "News Centre Six"). InCanada , the "NewsCentre" title was used byVancouver 'sCBUT in the 1980s, and bySaskatoon 'sCFQC-TV in the 1990s. It was also used inItaly byCanale 5 for its national newscast (as "News Centro 5") when it began operations in the early 1980s Fact|date=March 2008. InJapan , public broadcasterNHK launchedNews Center 9 (NC9) in 1974. NC9 achieved tremendous popularity as the first of its kind newscast in Japan.
