The municipality comprises the towns of Berlare proper, Overmere and Uitbergen. On January 1, 2006 Berlare had a total population of 14,092. The total area is 37.82 km² which gives a population density of 373 inhabitants per km². The current mayor of Berlare is Karel De Gucht, from the Liberal party VLD, also European Commissioner for Trade. Donkmeer, a big lake, is located here.
