Career
Her skill was the alleged reproduction of a psychic material she dubbed ectoplasm,[1][2] which emanated from her mouth and from the orifices of her body such as her nose and ears. She conducted several séances under the auspices of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR).[1]
Investigations
Carrière's psychic performances were investigated by Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes mystery series.[3] He believed that her performances were genuine and that she was not engaged in any deception. However, another psychic investigator of the time, Harry Houdini, observed one of her séances and asserted that they were fraudulent.[2] Houdini was never convinced by Carrière and likened her performance to a magicians' trick, the Hindu needle trick.[1]
