Flatwoods is a town in Braxton County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 348 at the 2000 census. It is found at exit 67 on Interstate 79. The area immediately around the exit has in recent years been commercialized to the point where it now has an outlet mall, a hotel, several gas stations, and many fast food restaurants. A well-known local restaurant is "The Waffle Hut," which is open 24 hours a day.

Flatwoods is usually known as the half way point in the state and for the Flatwoods monster UFO incident which occurred on September 12, 1952.

Geography

Flatwoods is located at coor dms|38|43|17|N|80|39|11|W|city (38.721374, -80.652957)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.1 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 348 people, 146 households, and 102 families residing in the town. The population density was 126.8/km² (328.7/mi²). There were 157 housing units at an average density of 57.2/km² (148.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.13% White, 0.57% Asian, 0.29% Pacific Islander, and 2.01% from two or more races.

There were 146 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 26.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $29,500, and the median income for a family was $35,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $15,938 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,025. About 11.4% of families and 18.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 8.6% of those age 65 or over.
