Bergholz is a village in Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 769 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Bergholz is located at coor dms|40|31|14|N|80|53|2|W|city (40.520509, -80.883815)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land.

History

During Morgan's Raid, a decisive Union victory in the Civil War in 1863, Confederate Brid. Gen. John Hunt Morgan traveled through the Moorefield, Harrisville, New Athens,
Smithfield, New Alexandria, Wintersville, Two Ridge,
Richmond, East Springfield, Bergholz, and Monroeville on his way to defeat at the Battle of Salineville.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 769 people, 293 households, and 201 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,383.7 people per square mile (530.2/km²). There were 317 housing units at an average density of 570.4/sq mi (218.6/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.44% White, 0.52% African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, and 0.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.13% of the population.

There were 293 households out of which 34.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. 25.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $33,438, and the median income for a family was $43,542. Males had a median income of $36,938 versus $17,708 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,986. About 9.5% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.0% of those under age 18 and 12.1% of those age 65 or over.

Famous people

Bergholz was the birthplace of MLB players Oscar Ray Grimes, Sr. and his twin brother, Austin Roy Grimes.
