Industry
Newmains was initially built by Lord Belhaven in the 19th century to house the workers of his nearby Coltness Ironworks. Built as a "dry" town, his clean-cut, sober workers were known as some of the most productive in the Glasgow Iron and Steel Company.[2] The village had a bus depot of the McKindless Group until February 2010. An open-cast coal mine is located at nearby Morningside. The Coltness works survived until very recently as a railway sleeper manufacturing facility for Tarmac, but were demolished in 2004.
Shopping
In October 2007, a new 24 hour Asda[3] superstore opened in the town. This is the first major supermarket chain to open a store in the town, although for many years the area has been served by SPAR which closed down in the summer of 2010 and Scotmid. The main shopping areas, Manse Road and Main Street, has some shops but not as many as nearby Wishaw or Motherwell. It is now home to only a few local merchants like the butcher shops Howieson of Newmains and D&H Brunton, and John Smith Hairdressers.
Services
Newmains has a public library and Newmains Health Centre with pharmacy, doctors[4][5] and children's dentistry.[6]

Buses are the only form of public transport in Newmains. Services by First Glasgow, Coakley and Stuart's, provide bus routes to Wishaw, Motherwell, Hamilton, Blantyre and Glasgow.

Rail
The Coltness branch[7] from the West Coast Main Line at Garriongill terminates near the village, but is used only for the transport of coal from the nearby open cast mining facility.
