Palatine Bridge is a village in Montgomery County, New York, United States. The population was 706 at the 2000 census. The basis of the name is the community's location in a region settled by Palatinate Germans.

The Village of Palatine Bridge is in the Town of Palatine. The community is in the western part of the county, west of Amsterdam.

Palatine Bridge is located on the Erie Canal.

History

Palatine Bridge was settled in 1723.

A bridge across the Mohawk River here built in 1798 gave the community it name.

The village was incorporated in 1867.

Residents of note

Webster Wagner was a local postmaster, state politician, and railroad inventor.

Geography

Palatine Bridge is located at coor dms|42|54|39|N|74|34|29|W|city (42.910890, -74.574827)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.5 km²), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (6.32%) is water.

The village is on the north side of the Mohawk River across from the Village of Canajoharie and the New York State Thruway.

New York State Route 5 (Grand Street) passes through Palatine Bridge, where it intersects with New York State Route 10 (Lafayette Street).

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 706 people, 276 households, and 179 families residing in the village. The population density was 795.2 people per square mile (306.3/km²). There were 306 housing units at an average density of 344.6/sq mi (132.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.30% White, 0.14% African American, 1.27% Asian, and 0.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.57% of the population.

There were 276 households out of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 31.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.84.

In the village the population was spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 34.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 86.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $32,361, and the median income for a family was $46,667. Males had a median income of $30,125 versus $22,014 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,285. About 8.1% of families and 11.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.1% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
