History

Asa Munn opened a mercantile business in the community around 1817.

In 1990 the village received national media attention and interviews by Connie Chung when a local dairy farmer, Delbert Ward, allegedly murdered his brother William Ward by suffocation. Adelbert was found not guilty at trial. In 1992 this incident was examined in the documentary Brother's Keeper.

Munnsville became a world renowned racing location for skateboarding because of the Madison County Gravity Festival which began in 2002. Skateboarders from all over North America and Europe descend on the town for the last weekend of July and race their skateboards at speeds up to 95 km/h.

Munnsville was the final home of poet Hayden Carruth.

The former Munnsville depot of the defunct (March 29, 1957) New York, Ontario & Western Railway is now a private residence, occupied by noted NYO&W historian and author John Taibi.

Munnsville was the former home of Colonel Darryl W. Hensley, (born March 15, 1960) who retired after 27 1/2 years of service (1983 to 2011) from the United States Army. The majority of his career was spent in the Information Warfare career field. His OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM combat awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and two Joint Meritorious Unit Awards. Colonel Hensley attended Stockbridge Valley High School before transferring to a private Baptist High School in Southeastern Kentucky. Colonel Hensley's father Carl Hensley worked at the General Electric Radar Design and Engineering Department in Syracuse and retired from General Electric as a Radar Technician after 32 years of service. Carl Hensley was featured in the Air and Space Magazine for his innovative field engineer work on the Over-the-Horizon Backscatter (OTH-B) radar transmit sites in Moscow, Maine and Christmas Valley, Oregon.
