Dumas is a town in Tippah County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 452 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Dumas is located at 34°38′4″N 88°50′52″W / 34.63444°N 88.84778°W / 34.63444; -88.84778 (34.634549, -88.847800)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.9 square miles (10 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 452 people, 181 households, and 133 families residing in the town. The population density is 116.0 inhabitants per square mile (44.7/km²). There are 192 housing units at an average density of 19.0 persons/km² (49.3 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.67% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.33% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 181 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 26.0% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,250, and the median income for a family is $40,391. Males have a median income of $30,179 versus $20,341 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,121. 14.0% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.5% are under the age of 18 and 33.3% are 65 or older.

The Town of Dumas is served by the South Tippah School District.
