Chlorine nitrate is an important atmospheric gas present in the stratosphere. It is an important sink of chlorine that contributes to the depletion of ozone.

It explosively reacts with metals, metal chlorides, alcohols, ethers, and most organic materials. When it is heated to decomposition, it emits toxic fumes of Cl2 and NOx.

It can be produced by the reaction of dichlorine monoxide and dinitrogen pentoxide at 0°C:

\rm \ Cl_2O + N_2O_5 \rightarrow 2ClONO_2

It can also react with alkenes:

\rm \ (CH_3)_2C=CH_2 + ClONO_2 \rightarrow O_2NOC(CH_3)_2CH_2Cl

Chlorine nitrate reacts with metal chlorides[1]:

\rm \ 4ClONO_2 + TiCl_4 \rightarrow Ti(NO_3)_4 + 4Cl_2
