It is immediately north of Taft, between the hugeMidway-Sunset Oil Field to the southwest, and the almost exhaustedBuena Vista Oil Field to the northeast. As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 3,512 people, 1,241 households, and 882 families residing in the CDP. Thepopulation density was 2,318.8 people per square mile (898.0/km²). There were 1,444 housing units at an average density of 953.4/sq mi (369.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 80.50% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 1.82% Native American, 1.28% Asian, 0.63% Pacific Islander, 11.62% from other races, and 3.53% from two or more races. 21.95% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 1,241 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.28.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $25,192, and the median income for a family was $30,256. Males had a median income of $34,474 versus $20,625 for females. The
per capita income for the CDP was $11,581. About 30.5% of families and 31.3% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 36.7% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.References
