Newt V. Mills

Newt Virgus Mills (September 27, 1899 - May 15, 1996) was a U.S. Representative from Louisiana.

Born in Calhoun, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, Mills attended the public schools of his native city, Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, Louisiana State Normal College at Natchitoches, and Spencer Business College, New Orleans, Louisiana. He also studied law. He taught school at Mer Rouge, Louisiana from 1921 to 1932. Supervisor of public accounts of Louisiana from 1933 to 1936. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits, cattle raising, real estate, and oil. He served as colonel on the staff of the Governor in 1936.

Mills was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifty, Seventy-sixth, and Seventy-seventh Congresses (January 3, 1937-January 3, 1943). He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1942, having been defeated by Charles E. McKenzie, a native of De Soto Parish. In 1950, Mills waged an unsuccessful intraparty challenge to U.S. Senator Russell B. Long, son of the legendary Huey Pierce Long, Jr..

Mills resumed interests in the oil and gas business, cotton planting, and the building supply business. He was a resident of Monroe, Louisiana, until his death on May 15, 1996.
