The Louisiana's 6th congressional district is located in the center of south Louisiana and contains the state capital, Baton Rouge, plus the western half of the Florida Parishes and areas west and south of Baton Rouge sometimes associated with Acadiana. Since its inception, boundaries of the 6th District have migrated from a position astraddle the Mississippi River to completely east of the Mississippi River and more recently astraddle the River again. For decades prior to 1974 the District was virtually coterminous with the Florida Parishes centered on Hammond; in 1974 the 6th District shed Saint Tammany Parish to the 1st District, and since then several redistrictings have incrementally moved the 6th District boundaries westward.
The seat was most recently held by Richard H. Baker, a Republican. Baker resigned on February 2, 2008[ [http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/15129481.html Baker departs public office] ] . A special election was held on May 3, to determine his replacement. Democratic candidate Don Cazayoux won the special election with a margin of victory just under 3 percent.][ [http://electionresults.sos.louisiana.gov/050308state.htm Louisiana district 2 special election results] ] Several Republicans qualified to challenge Cazayoux in the November 2008 regular congressional election.]
