New Boston, New Hampshire , Smith completed preparatory studies and attendedUnion College ,Schenectady, New York . During the Civil War served in theUnion Army . At the close of the war moved toShreveport, Louisiana , and engaged in mercantile pursuits. Held several local offices.He served as member of the State house of representatives 1870-1872.He served as proprietor of the Shreveport Southwestern Telegram.He served as president of the Shreveport Savings Bank &. Trust Co..Smith was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Representative-elect Samuel Peters and served from
November 24 ,1873 , toMarch 3 ,1875 .He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress.He was appointed collector of customs at the port of New Orleans by President Hayes and served fromMay 4 ,1878 , toFebruary 20 ,1879 .He moved toHot Springs, Arkansas , and engaged in the real estate business until his death in that city onJuly 9 ,1884 .He was interred in the West Street Cemetery,Milford, New Hampshire .References
