The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) is a tri-county federal public transit authority operated in Pompano Beach, Florida. The organization was created on July 1, 2003 by the Florida Legislature and enacted by the Florida Department of Transportation. Replacing the pre-existing Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority, the goal of incorporation was to expand cooperation between the Tri-Rail commuter services and the existing county public transport authorities: Broward County Transit, Miami-Dade Transit, and Palm Tran. Tri-Rail is solely operated by SFRTA.

Lines

The system runs on three lines: Tri-Rail, Metrorail, and Metromover, the latter two systems operated only in Miami-Dade County by Miami-Dade Transit. Construction on the first line, Metrorail, began in 1979, with operations between Dadeland South and Historic Overtown/Lyric Theatre (then "Overtown") inaugurated May 20, 1984. Metromover and Tri-Rail opened later in 1986 and 1987, respectively, with connections between commuter rail services at Tri-Rail/Metrorail Transfer Station beginning in 1989.
