The Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB), also called 'The John Garside Building', is a research institute of the University of Manchester, England which has been designed to enable academic communities to explore specific areas of interdisciplinary quantitative bioscience, largely through the efforts of multidisciplinary research teams. Research at MIB follows three broadly defined, interdisciplinary and complementary themes: Biological Mechanism and Catalysis, Molecular Bioengineering, Systems biology.[1][2][3][4]

Excerpt from the MIB official website (with kind permission of MIB webmaster) "The overall research mission of the MIB is challenge– as opposed to discipline-led, and focuses on developing an understanding, underpinned as far as possible by quantitative theory and mathematical rigour, of the properties of biomolecular and cellular components which impart characteristics that we associate with living systems. Some of these properties can be described as “emergent”, in that they represent (currently often unpredictable) consequences of higher-order organisation and networking. Allied with this investigative strategy is the development of novel enabling technologies." Professor John McCarthy, founding director.

Planning for the institute began late in 1998 and culminated with the official opening on October 25th 2006. The building won "Building of the Year" from Manchester Chamber's Building and Development Committee in 2006 along with Beetham Tower, Manchester.

The building has featured in several high profile television commercials, notably Injury Lawyers 4u.[5]
